Session 1

This session will focus mainly on the life of a carer. Identify what other carers say and experience, the pressures they face and the effects it has on their caring journey. To consider the positive side of caring. To listen and reflect on real life stories through DVD clips followed by questions and Questionnaire Findings. Looking at carers rights, receiving helpful hints/tips to support the carer, concluding with a learning outcome reflective exercise.

Session 2

This session will consider how carers and people react to the caring role. Looking at the most common reactions carers receive from others. It will consider those caring from a distance not least the care-receiver, the good times, sharing the care, personal touch, wearing a mask and young carers. It includes watching the DVD clips followed by discussion questions. Discuss and share Questionnaire Findings and helpful hints, concluding with a learning outcome reflective exercise.

Session 3

This session will enable the participant to receive the tools necessary for their caring journey.  To focus on confidence building, the importance of self-care, assertiveness, approaching and dealing with difficult situations also dealing and managing stress. To consider the necessary skills in communication and the need for support. To reflect on carers stories, shared experiences and Questionnaire Findings. It will include watching the DVD clips followed by discussion questions, concluding with a learning outcome reflective exercise.

Session 4

In this session the participants will focus their attention on the categories of care, making a decision, choosing a care home, transition to a care home setting, commonly felt emotions, personal experiences and dealing with concerns. It will include information regarding support and the setting up of a support group. Gain confidence from the helpful hints and Questionnaire Findings. Watch the DVD clips and discuss relevant questions, concluding with a learning outcome reflective exercise.

Session 5

This session will enable participants to gain a better understanding of dementia. The types of dementia, how does someone living with dementia feels, behaves and the necessary communication aids required for dementia care. It will include shared experiences from real stories, dementia care on a hospital ward. The 14 Commandments of Dementia Care, spirituality, faith and dementia and the challenge of the setting up of a dementia friendly environment. Watch the DVD clips and discuss relevant questions, concluding with a learning outcome reflective exercise.

Session 6

This session will challenge the participants to look at their own particular community. To gain a better understanding of what the word community and community care means and the support and help it offers to those who are on the caring journey. To think about the holistic approach to caring, the value of community engagement and pastoral care. The importance of and faith based groups care and support within the community. Tips and ideas. Watch the DVD clips and discuss relevant questions, concluding with a learning outcomes reflection exercise.

Session 7

This session will allow the participant to think about the process of grief and the importance of receiving support. How to ‘move on’ with life after the caring journey has come to an end. Adjusting to life, receiving support, changes in one’s life and coping with those changes. Taking care of yourself. Feelings experienced after the loss of loved a one. Including a DVD clip followed by relevant questions. Barbara shares her personal experience. Includes ‘My weekly planner’ template and the connection between music and memory, concluding with a learning outcome reflective exercise.

Session 8

This brief session will allow the participants to revisit their time together as a group, to reflect on each session content and explore their learning outcomes. A few simple activity worksheets are provided to allow individuals and group to reflect, share and feedback. Worksheets will focus on: My top tips for caring, My learning curve story and Where do I go from here?
